EDA, also known as skin conductance or galvanic skin response, stands for electrodermal activity.

Electrodermal activity reflects the activation of the sympathetic nervous system measured through eccrine sweat glands. EDA is often used as an indicator of emotional arousal or stress.

Because skin conductivity is mainly a result of sweat gland activity solely controlled by the sympathetic nervous system, EDA is one of the most direct methods to measure the stress related autonomic nervous system responses.

The measurement has been applied in psychophysiological research for over a 100 years (Boucsein, 2012). EDA is a sensitive indicator of the sympathetic activity of the autonomic nervous system, which is associated with emotion, cognition, and affection (e.g. Critchley, 2002).

Nuanic (previously Moodmetric) measurement signal has been validated by two independent studies (Torniainen et al., 2015; Pakarinen et al., 2019) and more are coming. Nuanic technology is already used in research institutes and corporate R&D labs worldwide for studying the reactions of autonomic nervous system.

Nuanic (DNE) index is our easy to interpret measure of EDA signal. It is an integer of 1 to 100 that is derived from the EDA signal. It is robust and resistant to motional artifacts.

EDA raw signal is prone to noise and difficult to interpret. To apply it in research it is required to have a good knowledge of the signal characteristics. Nuanic has understood this issue and provides an EDA measuring device that makes it possible to use the signal without prior knowledge of EDA.

Nuanic index is determined from the typical features associated with EDA: skin reaction frequency, reaction amplitude and skin conductance level.

The basic principle of the algorithm behind the index is that it compares changes in EDA to the typical, standard values measured for an individual over the time of wearing Nuanic ring. This means that unlike many consumer trackers the Nuanic measurement result is not compared to reference data.
